This product is over 70 pages of CVC short vowel pattern review!

There are 4 activities per vowel:

  1. Build-a-Book. In this activity students will be writing a short story. Each storybook focuses on a different short vowel sound. Each page in the book should build on each other and tell a story. There will be a word on each page that must be used in the sentence. Each page will be one sentence to the story. On each page students will draw a picture to go along with the story.
  2. CVC Short Vowel Flip Rings. Cut and laminate each word card. Punch a hole in the corner of each word card and put them on a binder ring ring. Students can flip through the word card rings and practice reading each short vowel word list.
  3. Matching. Cut and laminate the matching cards. Have students use the matching cards to practice the short vowel words.
  4. Sorting: Real Words vs. Nonsense Words. You can choose to use the color or black and white “Real Words” and “Nonsense Words” sorting headers. Only use one vowel sound at a time. There are 16 real words and 16 nonsense words per vowel sound. Laminate the cards for lasting use. Students will sort the words between real and nonsense. The header cards on in the “short a” section of this packet.

There are also 3 review activities that include all the vowels:

  • 5 in a Row. Students will need one die and something to cover their pictures, according to what they roll. Students will roll the die and cover a picture based on the number. If they roll a one, the will cover a short a word, if they roll a two a short e word, etc. Students are trying to get 5 in a row. Once they get 5 in a row, they can clear their board and play again.
  • Seek and Find. Students will use a blue, yellow, green, red, and orange crayon or marker and color each word according to the vowel sound.
  • Read it, Write it, Build it, Use it. Laminate the Read it, Write it, Build it, Use it board. Students will draw a word card and place it on the mat. They will read that word, then use a whiteboard marker to write it. Then they will build the word. You can cut and laminate the letter tiles I have provided, or if you have magnetic letter or other letter tiles in your classroom, they can use those letters to build the word too. Last, they will say a sentence out loud that uses that word. short a short e short i short o short u CVC vowel pattern
