Cracking the Classroom Code™ 5th Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking

$5.00

Will your class escape in time? Uh oh! Your students are stuck on Mars! Their satellite is broken, and they must fix it to communicate with Earth and return home. This is a review game for the math concepts taught in 5th grade under the domain of operations and algebraic thinking. It can be played in small groups, or as a whole class. If your class has never played an escape game before, I suggest playing as a whole class for the first time.

**Versions with and without QR codes included

This is an interactive game where the students are timed. Students try and solve clues and math problems to breakout and escape the classroom. You, the teacher, can decide how much time your students have to complete the task. I will suggest 45 minutes, but it is up to your discretion. You can project a timer for your class, or put one somewhere for all the students to see, so they can keep track of how much time they have left to complete their task.

This is similar to a scavenger hunt where students will be moving around the room, looking for clues to unlock their envelopes (I have included riddles and suggestions on where to hide each clue). To unlock their envelopes, students will need to solve math problems. A paper is provided so students can show their work for each problem. For many of the questions, students must have an answer that matches one on an envelope. If the answers do not match, they can’t open or “unlock” the envelope, and must rework the problem.

*Everything is included, however teachers must provide their own envelopes.

I give step by step instructions on how to set up the game, including pictures! This is sure to capture the attention of your students.

Topics covered in this game include:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
*Using parentheses and brackets in expressiosn, and evaluating expressions with these symbols.
*Writing and reading simple expressions that record calculations with numbers.
*Generating two numerical patterns using two given rules.
*Forming ordered pairs from two patterns, and graphing the ordered pairs.

I was looking for something quick to use and soon realized this would take a little more work. It could be because it is the end of the school year but there were some instructions that seemed more complicated then they needed to be. I did not end up using this resource at the end of the year, but am excited to work on it over the summer and have it ready to go fro next year. Content looks great!

I’m very excited to try this with my students this week. This time of year, we all get a bit bored and I’m constantly looking for something to encourage them to do the math yet in an interesting way. As I got my materials together to make this game, it all made sense. It’s a very thorough tutorial on putting it together. But I would recommend have all your materials sitting there before you try to figure it out.

  37. Stephanie O.

The students loved doing this activity, however, the teacher set up was a little hard to understand.

This would be a great project mid year as my students struggled with it during our solar system unit. Also do plan a few hours to set up everything with envelopes and understanding the directions. I am sure setting up a second one might not take as long however I do recommend printing it in color that too could also save some time!

    Fun product! Kids loved it!
